Rivian and Redwood Materials have expanded their partnership to include recycling both production battery scrap and retired electric vehicle battery packs. This initiative, which routes components through the company's nationwide service center network, aims to recover valuable minerals while supporting onsite energy storage.
Why it matters
The collaboration helps Rivian reduce production waste and stabilize energy costs by repurposing retired batteries for storage at their manufacturing facilities. It also improves resource efficiency by recovering materials for use in future battery manufacturing.
Redwood Materials will recover at least 95% of key minerals, including lithium and nickel, from battery packs collected at Rivian service centers. The partnership also includes a 10 MWh energy storage system at the Rivian plant in Normal, Illinois.
The players
Rivian
An electric vehicle manufacturer focused on adventure-oriented trucks and SUVs with a growing network of national service centers.
Redwood Materials
A circular supply chain company specializing in the recovery and recycling of battery materials like lithium, nickel, and cobalt.
The details
Redwood Materials manages the logistics of collecting battery packs from Rivian's service centers across the country. Once collected, each pack undergoes an evaluation to determine if it can be repurposed into an energy storage unit or must be broken down to recover raw materials. This dual approach allows for either immediate utility in manufacturing power needs or the extraction of high-value minerals for new battery production.
Timeline
October 21, 2026: Expansion of the battery recycling partnership is announced.
April 2026: The original partnership project deployment was established.
The Home Front
This partnership reflects the broader industry-wide push for closed-loop battery supply chains as electric vehicle manufacturers attempt to reduce reliance on raw material extraction. By localizing recycling, companies are attempting to lower production costs and improve grid reliability for their facilities.
If you are a Rivian owner, this initiative relies on the existing service center infrastructure to manage the lifecycle of your vehicle's battery. You should feel confident that authorized service centers are equipped to handle end-of-life battery disposal responsibly when your vehicle requires service.
The takeaway
The expansion shows how everyday vehicle maintenance supports larger sustainability goals through resource recovery. Owners can contribute to this cycle by ensuring all battery-related service is performed exclusively through official, manufacturer-authorized channels.
